I am Ella Dixon - PhD., LPC-S., MFT.
I prefer my clients to call me Dr. Ella. I am a licensed professional therapist/supervisor with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy. My private practice is focused on helping women overcome their personal challenges in order to live a healthier happier life. I have been in the service field for 20 plus years.
For the past 10 years I have been primarily focused on women’s issues. Women may experience certain biological or psycho-social challenges such as depression, anxiety, hormonal changes, infertility etc., related to gender, and these concerns can have a significant impact on mental health and well-being. Women may also face a number of socio-cultural issues such as sexism, Intimate partner violence, abuse/financial abuse that may also contribute to a greater risk of mental and physical health concerns.
My clinical experience involved counseling Individuals, couples, and families with social, behavioral, and emotional issues. I earned my Master’s and Doctoral Degrees in Counseling, Specialization: Marriage and family Therapy.
Counseling Philosophy
My counseling philosophy is that YOU matter. No matter how brief the interaction, all interactions are meaningful. Therefore our interaction as therapist and patient has to be meaningful for the best possible outcomes. Both, patient and therapist must participate in the relationship to achieve goals, learn new skills, improve and/or change behaviors, thoughts, and actions.
Theoretical Orientation
Due to my extensive background and training in marriage and family therapy, I often integrate more than one counseling orientation to address the needs of a variety of issues working with Individuals as well as their partners.
I work to incorporate a holistic perspective. My attempt is to encompass the whole person or systems connected to her. This helps to identify reoccurring patterns, styles, and themes that may be the contributing to the underlying cause as to why issues and concerns are not being resolved. It would also help clients gain awareness of their behaviors or thoughts that are keeping them stuck in destructive habits therefore keeping them in a constant state of distress.
Below are therapeutic approaches I primarily use to help patients decrease or resolve issues or concerns.
Solution Focused Therapy - focuses on identifying, utilizing and building on clients’ present strengths to overcome problems. SFT is a practical, goal oriented approach. It focuses on clear and realistic goal negotiations. SFT assumes that clients have some knowledge of what makes their life better, even though they may need guidance to describe the details of their better life. SFT assumes that clients already have at least some skills necessary to create solutions. SFT is a brief (4-12 sessions) approach to treatment however could require more session on a case by case basis.
Systems Therapy - focuses on patterns, themes, and communication styles present in clients’ current and past relationships, as well as the roles patients’ play within those relationships. System therapy is a multi-faceted and integrated approach. Systems Therapy reviews how one person’s growth can effect change in the entire system, even though others are not present in treatment. This is why not all members of a system [which can be a couple or family] need not to be present to address relationship issues.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) – focuses on modifying dysfunctional emotions, behaviors, and thoughts by interrogating negative or irrational beliefs. CBT rests on the idea that thoughts and perceptions influence behavior. CBT aims to identify harmful thoughts, assess whether they are an accurate depiction of reality, and, if they are not, employ strategies to challenge and overcome them. CBT generally takes 5 to 20 sessions, though there is no set time frame.
